CONWAY, SC - Ocean Bay Middle School participated in Aéropostale’s charity drive called “Teens For Jeans,” by collecting over twelve hundred of pairs of jeans for locals in need.
The donations were collected during a two-week period, ending on February 10th. The charity drive was a joint project between Mrs. Elizabeth Nutting and Mrs. Michelle Cline’s 7th Grade classes and Ms. Donnela Green-Johnson’s Positive Behavior Discovery classes.
Aéropostale has been sponsoring the “Teens For Jeans” drive for four years and have collected over 1.5 million jeans for the needy. Their website reports the statistic that “1 in 3 homeless people in the U.S. is under the age of 18.”
Students who brought in their gently-used jeans were given a coupon for 25% off a new pair of jeans at any Aéropostale store. Students collected jeans in the morning during breakfast and also made a big display in the front lobby, encouraging others to donate.
Students gave generously because they recognize that it is their duty to help others and it gives them a sense of self-worth and pride. When asked why he felt good by helping others, 8th Grader, Jaden Grayer said, “I feel like it’s the right thing to do. I think everyone should help someone that needs help because you never know what could happen, you could be like a hero or something, you could make a huge impact and change in their life.” 6th Grader, Ashley Crudo shared, “It’s the right thing to do. Whether it is donating something or picking up a pencil for someone, you’ll feel good afterwards.”
Monday, February 13, 2012, at 9:00am, Aeropostale managers and regional directors are coming to Ocean Bay Middle School to collect the donations.
