NORTH MYRTLE BEACH - Diane Scher's first-grade keyboarding students can't wait to finish their typing exercises so they can play a typing-related game near the end of each class.

"Gently on the keyboards, please," Scher reminds her students more than once.

The little typers continue to learn their way around the keyboard, and Scher said the computer skills go a long way for students of every age.

"They're so good on it, the catch on so quickly, with anything you try to show them," said Scher. "It's going to be their future."

Scher began teaching at North Myrtle Beach Primary School 12 years ago.

"When I started, I was given an empty room and a bunch of boxes of computers," she said.

It was curiosity, and a desire to help students learn about technology and computer-based activities that have helped Scher's classroom programs evolve over that time.  It was also curiosity that lead her to a very special reward.

Scher began searching the website for "Curiosity in the Classroom," connected to Discovery Channel's show of the same name.  A question on the site prompted teachers to answer with what makes the curious.

"How things work," Scher said she wrote. "I love to take things apart and see how they work, and put them back together and make them work if they're not. That was making me curious."

Her answer was good enough to win her the grand prize--an all expense-paid trip to Yellowstone National Park with her husband.  She said her co-workers are excited for her. Some of them joked they wanted to go, too--and many of them are serious about her bringing back valuable materials.

"Some of them have said, 'bring back pictures and information,' because we'll go by Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands, so it's going to be exciting to take a photo editorial of everything and be able to bring it back," she said.

Scher said she and her husband will go on the trip in July.
