MYRTLE BEACH - Wild Creations, the toymaker based in Myrtle Beach, was recently named one of the most successful small businesses in the country by a trade publication.
Inc. Magazine ranked the company as the 259th fastest-growing private company in it's recent Inc. 500 issue.
Co-founder and CEO Peter Gasca said his company continues to grow and remain successful, with only 14 employees, by focusing on relationships.
"Businesses are about relationships," said Gasca, who along with Rhett Power bought the company four years ago. "There's nobody that can go about it by themselves, so we developed nice relationships. We still have the same vendors we've had for the last four years. When times are tough, times are tough for them but we're all holding hands together. When times are good for us, times are good for them," he said.
Also this year, Wild Creations was named a Blue Ribbon company by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year given by Ernst and Young.
Gasca said he and Power knew the business could flourish and grow in South Carolina, and that's part of the reason they bought in Myrtle Beach.
"We were able to be the big fish in a small pond, if you will," Gasca said. "You stick us in California, and we are lost in the high-tech companies," he said.
Gasca also believes the Grand Strand could be home to more success stories about companies big and small if the attitude toward the region changes.
"We could have year-round business, we could have year-round culture events. Our favorite restaurants wouldn't have to shut down in November--if we had more businesses based here," he said.
