CONWAY - Horry County Fire Rescue announced that it has been awarded a $377,125.00 grant, under the Fiscal Year 2010 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER), from the Federal Government.
The SAFER grant is administered by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency along with the U.S. Fire Administration.
Funding from this grant will be used to hire a volunteer recruitment and retention coordinator for the Department, as well as cover the costs associated new hire physicals and outfitting of 50 additional volunteer personnel over a four-year period.
"First response to emergencies is a necessary in our line of work, and our volunteer firefighters do an outstanding job. During these tough economic times, we need to ensure that our fire stations are adequately staffed and equipped to respond to emergencies," said Garry Alderman, fire chief of Horry County Fire Rescue. "This SAFER grant will allow our department to recruit more volunteer firefighters and improve the emergency response capabilities so we can continue to protect the citizens of Horry County."
SAFER grants are administered to enhance the ability of grantees to attain and maintain 24-hour staffing and to assure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
The objective of the Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters activity is to create a more favorable working environment for volunteer firefighters. The primary focus of this activity is to enlist and/or retain volunteer firefighters who are trained in the operations of firefighting and emergency response.
