AYNOR – Crews with Horry County Fire Rescue worked to put out a fire at an old schoolhouse in Aynor Thursday evening.

The emergency call was made about 4:45 p.m. Thursday to a home at St. John Road and Pee Dee Road.

Horry County Spokesperson Leslie Yancey said the building was once a schoolhouse, but was converted into four apartments. One person was inside the building when it caught on fire. Neighbors woke the man up who was inside so he could get out safely.

He was the only person occupying the building, which is considered a total loss.

A cause of the fire has not been determined. HCFR received mutual aid from Marion and Rains fire departments.
