CONWAY, SC - On Thursday, firefighters continued to monitor a brush fire that's burned around 70 acres since last week. The fire started last Wednesday off of Juniper Bay Road near HWY 548 in Conway. Flames had died down but re-kindled on this week.
"We've been in a drought for about three weeks now the higher winds and lower humidity have caused some problems with keeping the fire inside the containment lines" said Eric West, South Carolina Forestry Commission.
Crews said the fire is contained but heat exhaustion remains a concern for firefighters.
"The hotter weather and being in our protective clothing crews can get overheated and they just need to stay hydrated" said West.
As a safety precaution for area residents crews blocked off parts of Hwy 548. Smoke continues to fill the air and some residents said the smell has seeped into their homes. Authorities said residents should keep their windows and doors shut as well as turn the air conditioning down in order to prevent smoke from coming into their home.
