The Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA, a branch of the YMCA of Coastal Carolina, announced today that it has been awarded LEED® Silver established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. It was important for the YMCA of Coastal Carolina and its Board of Directors to achieve LEED certification for this project and its Georgetown facility which was recently honored with LEED Gold.
The Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA, designed by Pegram Associates, Inc and constructed by FBI Construction, achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, LEED certified building save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
“The Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and this YMCA serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”
LEED certification of the YMCA was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:
Site: The site was selected to avoid development of inappropriate sites and reduce the environmental impact from the location of the building on the site. To reduce pollution and land development impacts from automobile use bicycle racks are provided, preferred parking for fuel efficient vehicles is provided and carpooling is encouraged by providing preferred parking. To promote biodiversity open space is maximized.
A plaque presentation will be held at the Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA on July 7, 2011 at 10:00 am. A representative from USGBC will be honoring the project team and present the LEED plaque.
