Hopeful extras lined the fence outside BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, waiting to show a casting company why they should be in the HBO show Eastbound and Down.
The show stars Danny McBride. His character is a burned-out major league baseball player who was heading to Myrtle Beach at the end of last season.
Vanessa Neimeyer with Fincannon & Associates, the company responsible for casting, said the film crew will arrive Wednesday from Wilmington, NC.
People had to submit information about themselves and a photo in order to be eligible for casting. Neimeyer’s company will then call back people they want to cast as extras.
True fans of the series showed up including Kevin Yazezi. “I’m a big fan of Eastbound and Down and I like everyone on the show,” he said.
There were also some people who thought this could help start an acting career. Others wanted to be around the stars, including Diane Doolittle who also works at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ games.
“It’s exciting, who wouldn't want to be on TV,” Doolittle said. “It's baseball and its the beach and its just a thrill and I brought my nephew so and he's an athlete and we're hoping to get him on TV too."
Pelicans General Manager Scott Brown is excited for what this film crew brings with it.
“This is adding a whole new layer of life into our ballpark and the curiosity around town, it’s great for us and it’s great for Myrtle Beach,” Brown said.
Brown also said he couldn’t put a price on this kind of exposure.
“Everyone knows about the beach part of Myrtle Beach but they don’t necessarily know that the Pelicans or any minor league baseball team plays here,” Brown said. “We’re excited about the prospects of maybe seeing some new faces here at the ballpark this year and seasons to come.”
The crew originally planned to shoot six scenes at BB&T Coastal Field, Ocean Boulevard and other parts of Myrtle Beach. But city spokesman Mark Kruea said a permit for some filming has not been approved yet because the city is waiting on paperwork.
Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey is expected to be here for some of the filming.
Neimeyer also said the series plans to come back to Myrtle Beach later in the season to shoot more scenes.
