SURFSIDE BEACH - Inside the home of Edye Papp on Monday morning, members of the Hallelujah Quartet belted out love songs sure to make any Horry County man or woman's heart melt.
The quartet is a section of the larger Grand Strand Harmony Chorus, which is part of Sweet Adelines, the international group of women's chorales. These ladies perform singing valentines around the area, and are gearing up for a busy week.
"I love doing it," said Diane Kane, whose been performing the valentines for eight years. "Each experience is unique, and it's a gift given from the heart."
For $30 a visit, your (most likely) unsuspecting valentine will get a song performed in his/her honor, a special Valentine's Day card, and other assorted gifts from the singers. They are still scheduling songs for February 12-14.
"You can hand anybody a box of candy," said Kane. "You can hand anybody some flowers--it's really rather impersonal. But when you sing a song for someone, that's very personal," she said.
The newest member of the quartet, Cynthia Dyer of Conway, says it's a gift she's proud to be able to give.
"For my whole life, I felt like my voice and my musicality were a gift I was given to give," she said.
