A new Girl Scout retail store opened Saturday in Myrtle Beach.

It’s the first one of its kind in all of Horry County, and it will serve Girl Scout Troops all over the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.

It will serve girls who make it their mission to serve the community.

When one thinks of the Girl Scout organization, cookies may come to mind, but Charley Trout and Ingram Cox from Troop 95 in Myrtle Beach say there is much more to the Girl Scout program than just cookies.

"We've learned to do stuff for our community and always help other people," said Cox.

That’s how the girls earned their 70, and counting, badges.

Before Saturday, the girls had to order their earned badges online or travel to Florence or Charleston.

A store in Horry County means easier access to Girl Scout merchandise.

"It means that we can walk in here and purchase everything we need for our troop,” said Troop 95 Leader, Michelle Cox.

“It also gets the kids so excited to be able to see this merchandise and to bring this in to our area,” she said.

Another reason to have the store in Myrtle Beach is to keep the money local.

All the money from the store will go to the Troops in Horry County.

"Our money stays with our girls and is more beneficial to them for programs that are put in to place for them, as opposed to Girl Scouts nationally and our money just going to a large fund," said Cox.

That might be the economic boost that the growing Girl Scout community in Horry County needs.

"If we don't have proceeds from the shop, then we would be able to help fewer girls, so with the proceeds from this, we can serve more and more girls, and more and more girls can get that Girl Scout experience,” said Mary Erskine, Communications Director for Girls Scouts of Eastern South Carolina.

The store is located at 1203 48th Ave. N., Suite 115 in Myrtle Beach.

The United Way of Horry County helps support the local Girl Scout organization as well.
