FLORENCE – Florence District 1 board of trustees approved the 2012-2013 district calendar at Thursday’s monthly board meeting.
Between holidays and teacher workdays, students will receive 28 days off in 2012-2013, two more than the current 2011-2012 calendar.
Hitting the halls on Monday August 20, 2012, students will face 176 full school days, two more days than the 2011-2012 calendar. The last day of classes for students will be June 6, 2013—a week later than the current school year. Graduation will be on June 8, 2013.
The board voted unanimously on the second reading of the calendar after resolving some issues board member E.J McIver and other members brought up at the December meeting.
“I was concerned about teachers going back after New Years,” McIver said Thursday evening. “I was thinking they should have a little more leeway instead of having New Years on January 1 and going back on January 2.”
New Years Day falls on a Tuesday in 2013, so the board approved the 2012-2013 calendar that has teachers and students returning to school the following Monday, January 7. Judging by the response from the audience at the meeting, which included some teachers, the change also received their approval.
Starting the Monday after spring break, April 8 through the Memorial Day weekend features a seven week stretch of no holidays, half-days or teacher work days. A similar stretch of time occurs from early September to late October.
Teachers will have eight days and two early dismissal days for staff development.
Parent teacher conferences again will be the first Monday in November.
