DARLINGTON, S.C. _ The Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board has been awarded a grant from the Byerly Foundation totaling $20,000 for the purchase of a new server, hardware, and computers.

These items were desperately needed in order to implement a new software program for the finance department.

The Byerly Foundation was established in 1995 with funds received from the sale of Byerly Hospital. The purpose of the foundation is to help make Hartsville become one of the best places in the world to live. The foundation’s focus since its inception has been on education, economic development and quality of life.

The Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board (DCDSNB) is a non-profit agency that serves over 500 people with intellectual disabilities, autism, and head and spinal cord injuries throughout Darlington County. In addition to service coordination, family support services, and day services for children and adults, DCDSNB currently provides residential services to 43 men and women in nine residential homes.

DCDSNB was initially named the Hartsville Area Developmental Center and had its beginning in 1967 when Lou Scott was asked to become director of a kindergarten class for the mentally retarded.  The initial location was at West Hartsville Church with two children enrolled in the program and an annual budget of $ 2,700.

DCDSNB now has a staff of 108 employees, a Board of Directors with nine members and an annual budget of $3.6 million. DCDSNB receives the majority of its funding from state and federal grants. The remaining portion is from organizations such as United Way of Hartsville and Darlington and private donations from other local businesses and individuals.

Donations may be sent to Darlington County Disabilities Foundation, 201 N. Damascus Church Rd., Hartsville, S.C.,  29550.
