Workers are done rebuilding the forward and main masts of the Battleship North Carolina as preservation work on the ship continues.
A spokeswoman for the battleship says the radar on the forward mast was lifted off the platform in December. The structure was rebuilt for reinforcement and placed back on the ship in January. It now sits on a sturdier foundation, and maintenance staff will work to have the radar turning by the summer.
Safety work on the forward and main masts included rebuilding handrails, and strengthening of braces and strut supports for platforms and yardarms. In addition, a safety tether leading up to the radar was reinforced along with completely replacing one section of the ladder.
Officials say the $110,000 project was on budget and on time.
