Thousands of feet hit the pavement in Myrtle Beach during the 2012 Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon Saturday morning.

More than 7,500 participants registered for the full 26.2 mile race.

The race began outside Broadway at the Beach, just North of 21st Avenue. The course covered parts of Robert Grissom Parkway, Kings Highway, and Farrow Parkway. The race finished at BB&T Coastal Field.

Crankchair participants began at 6:25 A.M., while cannons for the Marathon and Half Marathon went off at 6:30 A.M. to start the race.

Stuart Moran from Asheville, North Carolina finished the race first with a time of 2 hours and 26 minutes, breaking the marathon's record.

Saturday’s race was only Moran’s 2nd marathon. He has been a runner most of his life, but mainly stuck with shorter distances.

Moran says he went into Saturday’s marathon with several goals in mind. He accomplished 2 of them when he won the race and broke the record.

"I also wanted to run under 2:25. I was on pace until the last two miles and I sort of hit a wall a little bit,” said Moran.

“I lost a little bit of time there, but overall I feel good,” he said.

Jen Adams from Hudsonville, Michigan was the overall female winner of the race with a time of 2 hours and 53 minutes, a personal best.

Saturday’s race was also her 2nd marathon. She trained in the snowy terrain in Michigan and says the warmer beach weather attracted her to the race.

"I felt like it was a great course which is what runners love, and there was great support all along the way,” said Adams. “It was definitely a great marathon."

Adams plans to continue to train for the Boston Marathon that takes place in April.

The House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach hosts the post race party Saturday from 5 – 7 p.m.  This is free for all registered participants of any marathon weekend event and all volunteers. There is a $20 fee for guests and non-participants.  Tickets will be available at the expo or at the door.  The party is restricted to those of you aged 21 and over.
