Is coming to a head about (the Marlboro County) mega dump. The case goes to court again next week. So let’s review what’s happening. I got the right as a concern citizen and a land owner to speak about our lands, water and air especially when it’s being threatened. A giant corporation wants to bring garbage to S.C. from the whole east coast. That’s New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and soon. This one is in Marlboro County section called Wallace right near the N.C. border. It’s also is being fought by lots of N.C. citizens. They slip one large mountain of trash into Bishopville, S.C., and the smell is hurting the whole town. Once they bring it in our area we can forget about it.
We the concern citizens of Marlboro County have been fighting this big corporation called MRR and Z.V. Pate for almost five years. They took most of us to court to sue us for not letting them bring in their garbage, and for the next 35 years like they did Bishopville, and poison our water and air. We could get cancer, low birth rates, leukemia and lung disease. We made all the meeting at the Marlboro County Council and turned in 3,000 signatures to Dr. Carolyn Prince from our area churches and she ordered a referendum which you all voted 94 percent against the mega dump. Zoning board, planning board and all of the county council voted no. Then came a draft decision by DHEC against the land fill.
We lost two of our leaders, Gertrude Bach and Alberta Lintecume. They were and we are the care-takers of the earth in our county of Marlboro. ...
In closing, I hope Gov. Nikki Haley will read this article and save our state from these mega dumps. S.C. is a farming state and a tourist state; we shouldn’t accept trash from out of county or other states. We also want to remind everyone that the concerned citizens of Marlboro County are still fighting to stop this corporation from packing our ground with their trash. Once they pack it in, they’re not going to come take it back and we pray it don’t get into our water supply. Our chairman of the concern citizens of Marlboro County, Belvin Sweat and Tom Woods and Fay and Roy Quick and all members, we all promise not to quit. ...
I say with all the “No” votes we shouldn’t have to pray or go before a judge. ... Our meeting to get straight is at the court house Feb. 21 and 22 at 10 a.m. We need our 94 percent there.
