Charlotte cops upgrade for Democratic convention security

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Charlotte police will use federal money to upgrade their command center, lease motorcycles and find lodging for out-of-town officers as the city prepares for the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Under pressure, North Carolina's largest city on Friday released three pages of details about how it spent some of the $50 million in federal money it received for the convention to be held in September.

Charlotte had refused to reveal details about what it's buying with the federal money, including bid documents and purchase invoices. The Associated Press had filed a request to review the information.

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department will spend $1.7 million to upgrade space in its command center, and expand its motorcycle patrol. It also will house officers from outside departments who will help with security.
