MURRELLS INLET, SC - On Saturday, GsSCENE holds it’s fourth annual "Shuckin' on the Strand Oyster Roast."
The event takes place at the Hot Fish Club and includes all-you-can-eat oysters. Before people can chow down, it's important for them to know how to shuck.
Shucking is the term used for popping open an oyster. There's different ways to do it, you can pop it open from the hinge or from the side.
"Oyster roast are huge in the Myrtle Beach area" said Blakely Jenkins, GSscene Chamber Liaison. "We just want to have the biggest and best event around."
Jenkins said this year's annual event promises to hold more people, more music and more oysters than before.
"I have had several people call me, because they are worried because they don’t know how to shuck an oyster" said Jenkins.
For those who aren't familiar with shucking seafood, here's a quick lesson. Denny Springs from Harrelson's Seafood said it helps to start with a clean oyster, that way when you are handling it the dirt doesn't in turn get into the meat of the oyster. Springs said before you jump into shucking your oysters make sure you have a shucking knife and he recommends using a towel to help prevent the oyster from slipping out of your hand. Springs said shucking an oyster can be difficult.
“Oysters have a muscle in the back of its shell which physically holds that shell together" he said. "Heat loosens those muscles up and makes it's easier for you to lift open the shells. So until you steam that oyster that muscle is just like you holding on to something and it won't want to open up for you."
The annual oyster roast also includes a BBQ plate, drinks and live entertainment. Tickets cost $25 and people are encouraged to but them in advance.
