Thursday, Mcleod Children’s Hospital kicked off it’s annual fundraising campaign with the 10th Annual McLeod Children’s Hospital Radiothon.
On-air personalities from Qantum Communications stations WJMX 103.3 and WEGX Eagle 92.9 were on the air from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to tell stories from families of children who benefitted from the children’s hospital and how people can donate to the cause.
All the money raised from the telethon goes directly to the McLeod Children’s Hospital -- one of four Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in the state. Funds will be used to help support specialized care, medical equipment and programs needed in the treatment of critically ill and injured children at McLeod.
McLeod Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Director Carl Chelen said that medical equipment is expensive but a lot of the equipment isn’t suitable for use on children.
Equipment such as ventilators, beds and scales need to be made specifically for children. The Children’s Hospital provides medical care to children up to and beyond 18 years-old and Chelen said every dollar helps.
“It’s the cost of a cup of coffee once a month being sent into the children’s hospital. If everybody would do just that it would mean thousands of dollars,” Chelen said. “It would mean a new ventilator, a new crib or multiple ones, and another child’s life could be saved here at at the children’s hospital.”
Last year the radiothon raised more than $42,000 and helped more than 20,000 children.
The 10th Annual McLeod Children’s Hospital Radiothon continues through today, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as 103X and Eagle 92.9 broadcast live from the Child Life Activity Center.
