MYRTLE BEACH, SC - More and more companies, outside the tourism industry, look at the Grand Strand and the Pee Dee as a place to do business. A recent study conducted by an Atlanta-based consulting group showed that Myrtle Beach is a prime location for call center jobs. These types of jobs include customer service work such as making and receiving phone calls. Companies who use call centers typically employ hundreds of people.
Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development said attracting call centers to the Myrtle Beach area could make a big impact on our local economy. Currently, there is a call center located in Surfside Beach. PGBA is part of Blue Cross Blue Shield. The company employs roughly 300 customer service representatives at their call center in Surfside. The recent study said Myrtle Beach is a good fit for the call center industry. Researchers looked at factors such as the Myrtle Beach labor force, demographics as well as education levels attained by residents. Brad Lofton, Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development President, said the new study gives Myrtle Beach the credibility it needs to help attract more businesses to the area.
"We've been talking to technology companies around the country, everywhere from software support to medical billing and customer services" said Lofton. "To have the research on paper is a good marketing tool for us. When we are working with these kinds of companies we can share the findings with them that give us that objective third party validation."
Lofton said the pay scale for call center jobs typically range from $10 to $17 an hour. There's also a possibility a major roadside assistance call center will bring hundreds of new jobs to the Pee Dee. Last month, Agero held a job fair at Florence-Darlington technical college. The company still hasn't decided where it will locate.
