ON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A colleague of State Rep. Larry Womble says the nine-term Democratic lawmaker has been released from a Winston-Salem hospital, where he was recovering from injuries received in a head-on collision last December.

Rep. Earline Parmon said Monday the 70-year-old Womble was released from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The date of his release isn't known.

Parmon said Womble has been moved to a rehabilitation center for extensive therapy. She also said Womble's recovery is progressing, and that his speech is getting better. She added that the family is not revealing the name of the rehabilitation center.

Winston-Salem police said the car Womble was driving on Dec. 2 crossed the center line of a street, collided head-on with another vehicle and killed the other driver, 54-year-old David Carmichael.
