Rock slide closes I-40 west of Asheville

»  Comments | Post a Comment

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Transportation officials in Tennessee say a rock slide on westbound Interstate 40 in Haywood County in North Carolina will keep those lanes closed into next week. Authorities say the slide occurred near exit 451. The shutdown affects traffic near exit 20 at U.S. 276. The Tennessee Department of Transportation expects the road to remain closed until Feb. 7 as crews work to stabilize the area of the slide. One lane will be open to traffic as crew work to clear the rock slide. Traffic travelling west to Tennessee should take I-40 West to I-240 West in Asheville, to I-26 West. Follow I-26 West from Asheville to I-81 South in Tennessee, back to I-40. All commercial vehicles must use the detour. Eastbound traffic is currently unaffected by the rock slide.
