The Occupy Wall Street movement may be slowly spreading across the rest of the country, but Florence, South Carolina remains relatively unaffected.
No protestors could be found at the John L. McMillan Federal Building at 401 W. Evans Street in Florence despite messages distributed from a Facebook page and Twitter account at the end of September.
The protest was to coincide with others scheduled to take place Saturday at 3 p.m., however the Twitter account @OccupyFlorence has been inactive since Sept. 30 and links to the Facebook page indicate the page no longer exists.
A protest did occur in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, but only one person attended. An Occupy Spartanburg event, reported by the Associated Press, began Thursday and was expected to continue until Friday morning.
Florence did play host to a march and rally on Monday organized by the community activist group First Justice. Approximately 15-20 people marched from Pentecostal Temple on Pine Street to the Poynor Adult Education Center on Dargan Street for a small rally.
Organizers said they did not were partly inspired by protests in New York but that they did not consider themselves an extension of that movement.
The Occupy Wall Street protests are entering their fifth week in New York.
