DARLINGTON _ The Darlington County School District Board of Education announced last week that it has extended the contract of Superintendent Dr. Rainey Knight through 2013.
In a statement released by Board of Education Chairman Charles Govan, he stated, “Under the leadership of Dr. Knight, our district has flourished in tough economic times. She has kept us focused on improving the educational opportunities of our students, always asking what is in the best interest of our children. We commend Dr. Knight on this very favorable evaluation and look forward to continuing to work together for our children and our communities.”
Knight was given exceptional marks by board members during a recent evaluation process.
She was rated in the areas of “Relationship with the Board,” “Performance as Educational Leader,” “Management Skills and Abilities,” “Services to People Served,” “Fiscal Management,” “Personal and Professional Attributes,” “Community and Public Relations,” “Effective Leadership of Staff,” and “Student Learning and Achievement.”
Govan said that under Knight’s leadership, the district “has weathered several tough budget years, reducing the operating budget by more than $18 million while still maintaining our schools and even increasing our academic expectations. Our elementary and middle school report cards show the highest ratings the district has seen. Eleven schools and the district earned ‘Excellent’ on the school and district report cards issued by the South Carolina Department of Education. Ninety-five percent of students in Darlington County now attend schools rated “Average” or higher.”
Other noteworthy accomplishments Govan mentioned were:
_ The seniors of the class of 2011 earned more than $15 million in scholarships. In the past five years, Darlington County School District students have earned more than $68 million in scholarships!
_ The district’s technology plan continues to ensure classroom teachers are equipped with the state-of-the-art technology they need, including interactive whiteboards, document cameras, and other advanced technical devices to promote student learning.
_ The Darlington County School District is ranked fifth in the state in terms of academic achievement and scored an “Excellent” on the annual district report cards. The district also has the second highest graduation rate in the state, according to information from the SC Department of Education.
