COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Potential president candidates have primed South Carolina's money machine with more than $214,000 in the past year, but former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty may be the first to have given a little money back.
Pawlenty met Wednesday with Gov. Nikki Haley at the Statehouse. He was walking around the Capitol with a reporter and taking in a monument to African-American history when a man near tears wearing a ball cap approached. He told the well-dressed stranger that he had shredded his ATM card and needed bus fare.
Pawlenty turned to his aide and out came Pawlenty's wallet and a couple of worn dollar bills.
The grateful man went on to a bus stop. Pawlenty headed back to his hotel.
