MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Police said three people were arrested for performing an illegal liposuction in the bedroom of a North Myrtle Beach condo. The suspects are charged with first-degree assault and battery and unlawful practice of a regulated profession or occupation without a license. Police said a 19-year-old woman went to the hospital after she reportedly had the liposuction performed by the trio last Thursday. Officials said the woman had several cuts on her body and was vomiting. The woman told police she paid $1500 and promised to pay another $1500 after the procedure. Plastic surgery carries along with it risks even when it is performed by a board certified professional at an actual clinic.
Dr. Steven White, a board certified plastic surgeon, said lower cost may drive some patients to other countries or illegal procedures for plastic surgery. Dr. White said before getting plastic surgery patients should make sure they are going to an accredited facility, work with a board certified plastic surgeon, and take time to flip through before and after pictures of that particular doctor’s work. White said illegal procedure or not there, are some risks involved with plastic surgery.
"You can get bacteria infection a pretty serious one within the first 48 hours" he said. Then you are still susceptible to getting an infection with 10 days or 14 days after the surgery."
White said it is important for patients to have routine doctor visit after their plastic surgery.
People can find out information about area plastic surgeons by calling the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. The agency will provide information including whether a doctors is licensed and if there has been any disciplinary action against the plastic surgeon.
