The Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) will welcome rising eighth, ninth and 10th graders from across South Carolina to its Hartsville campus this week for its 2011 Summer Science Program (SSP).
SSP is a week-long, residential summer camp held at GSSM's campus in Hartsville. During SSP, campers will conduct interactive experiments in GSSM's state-of-the-art labs, participate in engaging sessions led by college professors and explore science outside of the classroom through field trips and other hands-on activities.
"SSP allows teens to explore and apply science in a fun environment that is unlike their typical classroom setting," said Randall La Cross, vice president of outreach and research for GSSM. "Through programs like SSP, we hope to inspire students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics."
Students will start their week with a welcome barbeque on Sunday evening, and the fun will continue throughout the week, closing with a dance party on Friday night. Guest appearances will be made by working science professionals, including a crime scene investigator and a nuclear physics professor. The first week of SSP will wrap on Saturday, with presentations from each group. The excitement of SSP begins again for a second week on Sunday.
Popular courses at SSP include LEGO Robotics, CSI-GSSM, Intro to Web Design and Great Experiments of Classical Physics. New courses offered this year include Creating Web Applets, Wildlife Photography, Creating Interactive Computer Simulations and Sports Ranking.
The summer science program will continue through July 2.
