ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Police say they have charged an Asheville teen in connection with an assault investigators have labeled a hate crime.
The 15-year-old was charged Wednesday with assault and damage to property.
The teen and three others are accused of taunting a man as gay, then assaulting him in the parking lot of an Asheville grocery store Feb. 14. He was treated for broken facial bones.
Investigators have accused the juvenile of pushing the man and causing his glasses to fall and break.
The boy's name was not released because he is a juvenile.
Twenty-five-year-old Lamon Lewis Hopkins of Weaverville has been charged with felony assault in the case.
Police say the officer who originally responded to the incident also is under investigation for not filing a police report on the matter.
