Devils Fork State Park: One of the Carolina's best kept secrets

SALEM, S.C. - For many, camping is a summer traditional and if you are looking for place to go Devils Fork State Park is said to be one of South Carolinas best kept secret. Park managers said the Devils Fork is the only public access to Lake Jocassee. The 644 acre park serves as both a site for and a gateway to the region's wide range of natural, historic and recreational activities.

More than 7,000 acres of serene water help paint the picturesque park.

"The water is so clear" said Nancy Kisner, Devils Fork visitor. "It's just beautiful."

Lake Jocassee is shallow enough for kids to play in but parts of the water hit 400 feet deep.

"It's so clear and so deep that we have a lot of scuba divers come to this park to use it for scuba diving" said Kevin Evans, Devils Fork Park Manager.

Evans said besides water sports, there are other attractions like the cascading waterfalls. The park provides a blend of natural and recreational amenities. There are lots of treasures hidden within the 33,000 acres of protected land around the lake. Last year, more than 330,000 visitors explored the sights and peaceful sounds at the park. While some just came for the day, others camped out for a few nights. Evans said there is something at the park for everyone.

"We have that experience of a wilderness campground where they are out on there own and they have to bring in their food and water" he said. " For others there are more upscale rooms with satellite television, air conditioning and queen size beds."

Park managers said while the summer is good for the water activities each season offers a different scene at Devils Fork. From now until the end of the July, the park offers a 40% discount for the winter months.

Another quaint place to stay nearby the park is the Three Pines View Inn. The bed and breakfast provides unique rooms with spectacular long range mountain views.
