The Friends and Alumni Association of Palmetto High School celebrated its annual “Black Achievement Awards Banquet” on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Mullins High School. The 26-year old organization provides scholarships to Mullins student scholars and athletes. The gesture is a tribute from alumni that attended high school during segregation.
Ironically, the Friends and Alumni Association honored past Palmetto Alumni Scholarship recipients that graduated with a degree in education and work in the Pee Dee area.
Palmetto Pioneer awards were presented to Marion School District One Director of Curriculum Kandace Rhames Bethea, McCormick Elementary School Principal Martina Yates Rush, Dillon High School Language Arts teacher Korriell Whaley, Marion Intermediate School teach Ashley Hughes and Palmetto Middle School Social Studies teacher Kelvin Edwards.
The annual event featured entertainment from the Mullins High School Combo Band.
The master of ceremony for the dinner and awards ceremony was Eric Troy. Also making presentations during the ceremony was Cassandra Strickland, Mullins High School curriculum facilitator.
The alumni association organized by graduates of Palmetto High School, including Marion County Councilman Milton Troy II, put together several activities during the course of the year, raising money for college scholarships. Graduates from Palmetto High School also gather at Smith Haven Park in Mullins for a July 4th celebration with family and friends along with a fundraiser.
Receiving scholarship awards for this year are Palmetto Scholars Cameron Lee Nelson and Felicia Michelle Bethea.
Palmetto athletes are Rockeem Leonard, Joshua James, Terrance Thompson, Avery Grant, George Rogers, Trevor Dantzler and B. J. Crawford.
