HARTSVILLE, S.C. _ Orlando Hudson, a Major League all-star, was touted Friday as a superstar of education as well.
Hudson, a Darlington County native and second baseman for the San Diego Padres, was presented the 2011 Jimmy Newsom Signature Award during Friday Darlington County School District’s Education forum at Hartsville Country Club. Named after the district’s former superintendent, the recipient of the award is nominated and chosen by the teachers based on the individual’s or organization’s impact on the school district over the past year.
In presenting the award, Newsom called Hudson “a tireless advocate of exceptional education students” and said he was “truly a superstar.”
“This is a great honor,” Hudson said. “I’m blessed to be in the position that I am in and able to give back.”
Hudson’s C.A.T.C.H. (Curing Autism Through Change and Hope) Foundation provides funding for special professional development for teachers as well as programs for exceptional education students. He regularly visits the exceptional education classes across the district, lending an ear and a smile for all the students. His Foundation hosts events throughout the year for students of all ages and abilities. Most recently, he held a baseball clinic for student athletes (or those that wanted to be) and is planning a special needs Christmas party.
