Hemingway flower shop readies for Mother's Day

Harriet Stone creates a special Mother's Day arrangement at one of Hemingway's only flower shops. According to owner Barbara Allen, Mother's Day is one of the busiest times of the year at the shop.

For sons and daughters around the world, it’s that time of year again. The time when cards are mailed and hugs are given to show just how much one loves their mother.

Throughout the celebration of Mother’s Day, there has always been someone to help with the gift giving, and in Hemingway, that is still the case as Country Garden Floral and China is ready for the holiday rush once again.

Barbara Allen, the owner of County Garden Floral and China, said that while Mother’s Day isn’t the shop’s busiest time of the year, it certainly does standout when it comes to the sheer volume of arrangements.

“I think we actually have more for Mother’s Day than we do for Valentines Day,” Allen said. “Other than Christmas, this is one of the biggest times of the year.”

“Mother’s Day is very busy, and there was one time where it used to be just flowers, but now it’s more about the arrangements and things like that.”

Allen said that while she loves doing the work, one of the toughest things to do when curating is to make sure that all deliveries are made on time.

“The hardest part that we have is trying to find everybody,” she said. “That’s the most difficult part of it, but we always do pretty good job of getting (the arrangements out).”

“We’re usually prepared to meet demand. We have a truck that goes out twice a week and we have a truck that we keep everything in with a cooler incase anything needs to be stored that way.”

While Valentines Day is the former largest holiday for flowers, Allen said that she has seen a large increase in the demand for arrangements around Mother’s Day over the past few years.

“One time Valentines was bigger and now Mother’s Day is becoming larger and Valentines is kind of going down,” she said. “It has been back and forth before, but Mother’s Day is larger now.”

“(Valentines Day) was big before the Wal-Mart, the grocery stores and all those other places had flowers. You can go out and get a dozen roses cheaper there than you can here.”

For Allen, though, creating beautiful arrangements isn’t just a business, as Country Garden Floral and China has been open for business going on 20 years. Through the work, she said that she finds a place where she is doing what she knows she was meant to do.

“I can get in here and I just forget every problem and every worry that I have,” she said. “When I lost my mama and daddy, if it wouldn’t have been for this, I don’t know if I would have been able to make it through it.”

“This is the most comforting, relaxing place – there’s some pressure, when you’re rushing to get something done, but there’s nothing I enjoy more.”
