A woman killed in a Williamsburg County car accident Monday night has been identified as a teacher at Hemingway High School.
Janelle Holloman LaVaughn, 48, of 3364 Martin Luther Kings Jr. Highway, Kingstree, died yesterday from injuries sustained following a head-on crash with a Williamsburg County Sheriff's deputy, according to county coroner Harrison McKnight.
A staff member at Hemingway High confirmed LaVaughn was a teacher there.
The accident occurred at 5:27pm Monday near the intersection of SC 261 and SC 512. caused traffic delays for three hours.
Williamsburg County Sheriff's deputy Tyrone Williams, 41, was traveling East on SC 261 in his patrol car when it struck a 2005 Chevrolet sedan driven by LaVaughn traveling West in a near head-on collision, SC Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said last night.
Williamsburg County Sheriff Michael Johnson said Tuesday morning Williams' was in serious condition at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Johnson said the deputy was in surgery but did not have further details on his condition.
Johnson said the SCHP was investigating the crash and that he had not recieved any updates.
LaVaughn was wearing a seatbelt, but Williams was not restrained.
Troopers were still trying to determine which driver crossed left of center, causing the crash, Collins said last night.
No charges had been filed as of Monday night.
