FLORENCE — Grade school-aged children in Florence are improving their math and English skills while playing Scrabble, thanks to a new program, Think And Play Scrabble (T.A.P.S.), created by We Are The Future, an organization committed to enhancing children’s learning.
Daisy Walden founded T.A.P.S. and We Are the Future to help youth have a brighter future. She said she enjoys teaching children how to play scrabble because of the joy it brings them.
“Their minds are so much on the game, Scrabble. Because they are scoring they feel like they are winning,” Walden said.
Walden said the programs offered by We Are The Future make her feel good but what matters most to her is how the children feel.
“I need them to enjoy the game. I need them to understand that this is also going to be a stepping stone for them as far as math and English,” Walden said.
Nakenya McCoy, 9, learned to play Scrabble for the first time Tuesday. So far, she said she is having fun.
“It’s hard because I’ve never played Scrabble before so it will take me a little while to catch on, but once I get it, it will be easier,” McCoy said.
We Are The Future, located at 2704 S. Irby St., in Florence offers programs for people of all ages, from educational programs for children to Scrabble tournaments for adults. For more information about the programs offered by We Are The Future, call 665-2700.
