The first Heritage Music and Arts Festival is bringing local and regional visual artists to Lake City, and organizers are looking for additional talent from the area for future festivals.
Jane Madden, who is volunteering with the festival, hopes the event will help her “grow a really powerful series of connections” with artists in the Lake City community, she said.
“There’s a lot of talent; we just need to get it out,” she said.
Madden said organizers are seeking volunteers for arts displays during the festival, which is combined with this year’s South Carolina Tobacco Festival.
She also works with downtown Florence’s Art Trail Gallery and said she knows the importance of protecting artwork.
“When we have someone bring their artwork in, it’s a trust relationship, and we want to make sure that their artwork is watched appropriately,” she said.
For example, volunteers might need to gently discourage curious children from touching paintings, she said. Therefore, the festival needs people who are friendly and welcoming — and they don’t even have to know a great deal about art, she said.
The festival will have art displays that begin Sept. 16 and run through Sept. 18 at the Railway restaurant and the Fire Tower on Moore Farms, while displays at the Lake City Country Club will run through Sept. 19.
At least two volunteers at a time are needed for the exhibits, which will run from 1-7 p.m. Sept. 16-18 and 1-5 p.m. Sept. 19, Madden said.
Many of the items on display will also be for sale.
Meanwhile, the creations of Mary Moody Williams (furniture), Carolyn Jebaily (ceramics), and Alex Palkovich (bronze) are already on display at the Lake City Public Library. The National Bean Market Museum Gift Shop, on Main Street in Lake City, has a window display devoted to one of the advance exhibits.
On Sept. 18, the Lake City Public Library’s parking lot will transform into the Artisan Village on the Green from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The attraction will feature wood carving, metalwork, old-fashioned spinning and painting. It will provide opportunities to watch the artists at work, as well.
More information about the visual arts exhibits and the artists, as well as directions to the exhibits, are available online at https://sites.google.com/site/heritagefestivalarts.
As of Monday, maps and information will also be at the local public library, the Greater Lake City Chamber of Commerce and the National Bean Market Museum Gift Shop, among other locations.
