MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The fifth annual Beach, Boogie & Barbeque Festival, held Sept. 3 and 4, wrapped up the Sun Fun Celebration of Summer with a fireworks finale in Grand Park at Market Common and an estimated attendance of 15,000 to 20,000.
The festivities began with the 59th annual Sun Fun Festival June 4 and 5.
The fun lasted all summer long as the Sun Fun Festival Celebration of Summer, sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, provided numerous free, family-friendly events, concerts and entertainment to tens of thousands of locals and visitors.
A total of 43 teams competed in the “Anything Goes” competition, the official Kansas City Barbeque Society Open Invitational and the Kansas City Barbeque Society Cook-off.
The KCBS Cook-off, in its second year at the Beach, Boogie and Barbeque Festival, helped attract competitors from throughout the United States.
The awards given out on Friday, Sept. 3 were:
“Anything Goes” ($1000 and trophy): Mike’s Catering, Summerville, SC (Shrimp and Grits)
Shriners Division VIP Escorts ($500): Unit Team #1, Summerville, SC
People Choice (SeaMist Vacation Package): Omar Jolly Jeepsters, Conway, SC (Chicken Bog)
Best Booth (SeaMist Vacation Package): Butts R Us, Waxhaw, NC
Best T-Shirt (SeaMist Vacation Package): Monkey Bottom BBQ, Timmonsville, SC
The awards given out on Saturday, Sept. 4 were:
KCBS Grand Champion ($1000 and trophy): Bub-ba-que, Atlanta, Ga.
KCBS Reserve Grand Champion ($500 and trophy): Pickin Porkers, Winston-Salem, NC
KCBS Chicken Category ($500 and trophy): Bub-ba-que, Atlanta, Ga.
KCBS Pork Ribs Category ($500 and trophy): The Soundside Smokers, Currituck, NC
KCBS Pork Brisket Category ($500 and trophy): Bub-ba-que, Atlanta, Ga.
Shrine BBQ Network Division Winner ($1000): Rockin’ Pig, Laurinburg, NC
Shrine BBQ Network Sauce Category ($300): Fat Back’s BBQ and Rib Shack, Fayetteville, NC
More than $20,000 in cash and prizes were awarded to winners of all competitions.
This year’s festival had the largest turnout yet, and all barbeque proceeds significantly benefited the Omar Shriners Temple.
