Volunteers of the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross provided assistance to four families who lost their homes to fire during the Labor Day weekend. Two fires in Kingstree in Williamsburg County left 4 adults in need of assistance. A Sept. 4 fire destroyed a single family home on Brooks Street and a Sept. 5 fire destroyed a mobile home on Imgraham Road. Also on Sept. 5, a single family home on Lafayette Street in Georgetown left 2 adults and 4 children without a home and a mobile home was destroyed by fire on Olin Road in Conway leaving 2 adults without a home.
Red Cross volunteers assisted with providing for the families immediate emergency needs of food, clothing and shelter.
Since July 1, the local Red Cross hass assisted 100 people, including 29 children, who have lost their homes to fire. In Williamsburg County, there have been 9 fires in this time period affecting 24 people; in Georgetown, 6 fires affecting 27 people; and in Horry County, 16 fires affecting 49 people. The chapter serves clients in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties.
The Red Cross provides for the immediate emergency needs of disaster victims, which includes lodging, meals and clothing. In addition, the Red Cross can provide mental health crisis counseling to those in need, as well as assistance in developing a recovery plan to get the family back to pre-disaster conditions as quickly as possible.
