Emergency workers honored at Johnsonville football game

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, members of Johnsonville emergency service groups were honored by the community during halftime of the Johnsonville, Hemingway football game Friday night.

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, members of Johnsonville emergency service groups were honored by the community during halftime of the Johnsonville, Hemingway football game Friday night.

Johnsonville Fire District is an all volunteer fire department with a total of 40 volunteers that protect 10,000 citizens throughout the community. Among their many duties, JFD workers investigate all fires, accidental and suspicious; educate local schools and civic groups on fire safety; providing fire extinguisher training and smoke detectors to the needy.

The volunteers honored at Friday’s game represented 3,529 hours of training and 6,500 hours on fire response, according to a release issued last week.

“This is time spent away from their family, work and other activities,” the release said. “If these men and women were being paid at a normal wage, it would cost over $1.2 million per year just in salaries.”

To honor the volunteers, each school in the Florence 5 disrict presented each volunteer with gift cards to Big D’s BBQ Barn and a gift card to Shady Rest Restaurant.

Students at Johnsonville Elementary School made an additional contribution by raising $800 in popsicle sales over the last week and donated the proceeds to purchase smoke alarms for those who need them in the community.

Those in need of smoke detectors could acquire one by visiting a booth set up by the Johnsonville ladder truck, which was set up in the stadium for Friday’s football game.
