Broadway at the Beach kicked off the Christmas season Saturday with its 16th Annual Tree Lighting Celebration.
The event included a series of holiday performances by the kickline, Nuncrckers and the Christmas on Ice ensemble from the Palace Theatre, the Coastal Children’s Choir, the Carolina Freestyle Cloggers and the Elvis tribute artist from Legends in Concert.
Special guests were Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, according to a release issued by the center.
“Guests are advised to bundle up as meteorologists are forecasting a 100 percent chance of snow at the celebration,” according to the release.
At 7 p.m. the 52-foot tall musical tree of lights -- more than 141,000 in total – was turned on.
The lights on the Broadway at the Beach tree are synchronized to play five holiday songs, “All I Want For Christmas,” “It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year,” “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Little Saint Nick,” and “Let It Snow.” The tree will play these songs every night on the hour through Dec. 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each presentation will last about 12 minutes, according to the release.
“One of our favorite annual events at Broadway at the Beach is the annual tree lighting, which is a great way for every family to jump-start their holiday spirit,” said Melissa Armstrong, marketing assistant at Broadway at the Beach. “With festive live performances, the tree lighting, fireworks, and of course, ap-pearances by Santa and his buddies, this is a treat.”
Families who attend the event said they enjoy watching the kids get in the holiday spirit.
"It's fun. It gets you in the spirit of christmas," said Carolyn Sackett.
"It's Christmas," continued her husband, Ken Sackett. "It gets you in the spirit of Christmas for them."
