MYRTLE BEACH - A Myrtle Beach hair salon is joining salons across the nation by collecting hair clippings for “hair mats” that will be used to soak up the oil spilled in the Gulf.
Mirage Hair Studio announced Thursday in a press release that salons nationwide are collecting, boxing, and shipping hair clippings, swept off their floors to Matter of Trust charities in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida.
When collected, the organization takes the fibers and they are either stuffed into booms or woven into hair mats.
Hair is absorbent, large amounts of it can be used to soak up the oil before it damages the Gulf Coast shore.
Stuffing this donated hair into donated nylon stockings; Matter of Trust creates highly absorbent booms to contain oil spills.
A pound of hair can absorb one quart in one minute, and hair mats can be wrung out and reused up to 100 times.
One quart of oil can contaminate one million gallons of drinking water.
The community is encouraged to participate by going to get a haircut and bringing along a pair of, clean pantyhose with you for donation (runs are okay).
Mirage Hair Studio is located at 5903 North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach. Miragehairstudio.com
