MYRTLE BEACH -- First was the "Cash for Clunkers" program, then Wednesday came the "Cash for Appliances" rebate program.
According to the S.C. Energy Star Appliance Rebate Program Web site, it’s all because a total of $3.9 million is available in rebates to South Carolina residents who buy Energy Star appliances in the state.
Customers can continue to use this rebate until all funds are exhausted. The program is funded by the state’s share of federal stimulus funds being distributed to each state for appliance rebates.
“We’ve been very busy since this morning,” Wendy Avery, appliance coordinator at Sears in Coastal Grand Mall, said Wednesday. “We're expecting to go full through until the money is gone."
Greg Thompson, one of the early morning customers, said he made sure he won't get left behind when that money eventually runs out.
”Due to the fact that my dishwasher doesn't work so well anymore, it's definitely a good opportunity for me to go ahead and purchase one now and save $50 on the dishwasher that I bought," he said.
Some of the funds are allocated for whole-house appliances, such as heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioning units, which can give a consumer $500 back.
The other $1.85 million will give rebates for appliances that are typically easier to install. Those items include refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines.
A dish and clothes washer will give a customer a $50 rebate while a refrigerator can get you $100 rebate.
“If you get 10 percent of people using new products that are Energy Star, you're looking at millions of gallons of water, millions of kilowatts of electricity that are saved,” Avery said “And not only that, it's good for our planet, it's good for our customer, their bottom line is reduced.”
"Fifty dollars is $50. You can’t lose on that. I mean if somebody is giving you money, it'd be kinda silly not to go ahead and take it," Thompson said.

Rebates will not apply to online purchases or purchases made before March 31, 2010.
