MYRTLE BEACH - It used to be, if you had a question or wanted to know more about a given topic, you could go to the local library and check out a book. Then came Google, and the infinite possibilities of the massive online search engine.
Now, if you're not near a library or a computer, and you have a question, you can whip out your cell phone, and text a librarian.
Chapin Memorial Library in Myrtle Beach now participates in the "Text A Librarian" service. It's a free correspondence that has shown to be successful since it started in September.
"Sometimes we look it up in a book, or it's something online," said Carolyn Savage, who works in the reference section of the library. "The point of the service is convenience and speed. We try to respond within an hour," she said.
To send in a question, just text "askcml," then the question (Example: "askcml What time does the library open?") to 66746. Standard text messaging rates do apply.
Savage said if someone submits a question at a time when the library is closed, then the service will send an auto-reply stating that the sender will get an answer just as soon as the library opens.
