FLORENCE — Friday’s announcement of Wachovia’s $75,000 donation to Florence-Darlington Technical College dovetails news that the bank is hiring.
Wachovia recently hired 17 new store employees, including two business bankers. The hiring is a reflection of the Wells Fargo business model, which requires more staff, said John Bankson, Pee Dee market president for Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Co.
“We’re hiring more staff to take even better care of our customers,” Bankson said. “We’re especially interested in hiring tellers who would like to stay with the company and move up to become personal bankers and make a career with us.”
On Friday, the bank also unveiled its new automatic teller machines that promise to be more friendly to the environment and to the bank’s customers.
The new envelope-free ATMs “speak” six languages; have voice instructions for the visually impaired in English and Spanish; feature account transfers and mini-statements; and also sell postage stamps.
The ATMs accept stacks of up to 50 cash bills of various denominations or a stack of up to 30 checks. The machines image the bills and checks immediately and provide check images to users instead of requiring users to feed the checks one by one.
Another helpful feature is the “bread crumbs” function, which allows customers to backtrack to previous steps and make easy changes.
“I think consumers and businesses will especially like our envelope-free ATMs,” Michael Long, manager of the Florence Mall store, said. “They save our customers time and hassle. They don’t need to write on an envelope, do any math or key in a deposit amount. The ATM does all the work.”
The new ATMs should be especially helpful to small businesses that have to have check deposits in by 8 p.m. for funds to be available at midnight, because deposits can be made at the close of the business day.
Because the machines don’t take envelopes or deposit slips, the ATMs already have saved company-wide an estimated 550 tons of paper, equaling 9,883 trees.
The installations of the new machines will be complete at all Florence locations by the first week in April.
