TIMMONSVILLE — Elder Dan Reddin and his wife, Pearline, were married by a justice of the peace in Timmonsville 60 years ago and have never spent a night away from each other.
Reddin is pastor of Christ Temple Holiness Church in Timmonsville and Pearline is the first lady. They founded the church in the 1980s.
They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this weekend at the church.
The Reddins dated for three weeks before being married by a justice of the peace named “Mr. Parnell.” They knew they were right for each other.
“The spirit of the Lord has always been in us and kept us together,” Dan said. “It’s kind of like Jonah, you’ve got to do what the Lord tells you to do.”
Dan and Pearline are known throughout Timmonsville for their many kindnesses and ministering to those who need visiting.
Before being interviewed, they’d visited Mary Gillard at her home in Timmonsville and Pearlina McDonald at a Florence hospital.
Although Gillard is older than the Reddins, she considers them like a mother and father because they take such good care of her.
They take equally good care of McDonald.
“Love makes us want to visit people,” Pearline said. “The Lord has made us a team.”
The Lord has also kept them together in harmony.
“We are led by the spirit,” Dan said. “We believe we ought to love everybody and treat people like we want to be treated.”
“We come from the old school,” Pearline said. “We pray throughout the day. We can’t ever thank the Lord enough for our blessings.”
Dan said his sermons are inspired by the Lord. The length depends on how long the spirit dwells within him.
And he’s not by himself at the front of the church.
Pearline plays the organ. She plays music by ear.
Her favorite hymn is “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.”
The Reddins have six children, three boys and three girls. All were brought up on the fresh vegetables Dan is famous for raising in his garden.
“You don’t go hungry if you live next to my grandparents,” said Brian Reddin. “Granddaddy grows the best turnips, collards and peas you’ve ever put in your mouth.”
“We just put God first in everything,” Dan said. “We try to live life right by being honest with ourselves and by treating other like you want to be treated.”
