HARTSVILLE - On March 30, Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center will honor local physicians in observance of National Dr.’s Day. This annual recognition of physicians has been a southern tradition for over 70 years.
The observance of Doctors Day began in 1933 in Winder, Ga., when the Barrow County Auxiliary decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. For this first observance they mailed cards to physicians and their wives and placed flowers on the graves of deceased doctors.
That date was chosen specifically because on March 30, 1842, a Georgian, Dr. Crawford W. Long, first used ether anesthesia for a surgical procedure.
The resolution establishing March 30 as Doctors Day preceded from the Barrow County Medical Auxiliary to the Georgia State Medical Auxiliary to the Southern Medical Association Women’s Auxiliary, and in 1958 a resolution was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1990 legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors Day.
Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center would like to encourage the citizens of Darlington County to express their thankfulness and gratitude to our local physicians who provide quality healthcare to our community and surrounding areas.
