DARLINGTON - The Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina honored the Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville during the annual Mary Dean Brewer Woman of Distinction Award Dinner Friday. Martha Hunn was emcee for the evening, and Bill Yonce was the auctioneer for the live auction held in conjunction with the dinner.
The award is named for Mary Dean Brewer who was a Girl Scout leader of unusual ability and who suffered a premature death due to cancer.
Perkins joins a distinguished group of recipients this year that includes Barbara Blain-Olds of Conway, Sandra Bridgers of Myrtle Beach, Laura DuRant of Myrtle Beach, Johnnie Luehrs of Latta, Dorothy Tedder Smith of Bishopville and Grace Grady (posthumous).
A number of Hartsville women, have been recognized as Women of Distinction including Belinda Copeland, a member of 2010 event organizational committee.
Perkins has served the Hartsville First Presbyterian Church for nine years, and she has served as adjunct faculty in the Department of Religion at Presbyterian College as well as retreat speaker and council moderator. She is on the Board of Trustees of Presbyterian College, the Alumni Council of Columbia Theological Seminary and chair of the Committee on Ministry for the Presbytery of New Harmony.
Perkins is a member of the Hartsville Kiwanis Club, a mentor for the Celtic Cross program at Presbyterian College, a state representative for the Fund for Theological Education and is president-elect of the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity Darlington County.
A graduate of the McCormick Theological Seminary, Columbia Theological Seminary and Presbyterian College, Perkins lives in Hartsville with her husband. They have a son, a daughter and one grandchild.
The Girl Scouts of America, celebrating its 98th anniversary this year, was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Ga. The Girl Scout Council of the Pee Dee Area Inc. was founded in 1956, and in 2007 the Low Country and Pee Dee councils were realigned to become Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, serving more than 13,000 girls and 5,000 adults members across 21 counties.
