FLORENCE - The Florence County Sheriff’s Office along with other local law enforcement agencies in the 12th Judicial Circuit, conducted traffic safety checkpoints Friday night at designated areas throughout Florence.
The sheriff’s office was the host agency for these operations, which are sponsored through the S.C. Law Enforcement Network.
The focus of the traffic safety checkpoints is the prevention of motor vehicle accidents and the detection and enforcement of motor vehicle violations.
Statistically, a police presence helps to reduce incidents and increase safety, Capt. Michael Nunn said.
Deputies check the license and registration of vehicles passing through the checkpoints and inspect vehicles further when they see something that may be a safety concern, from children improperly restrained to open containers and drug paraphernalia.
"Our main goal for these checkpoints is safety," Nunn said.
Gregg Griggs, the law enforcement liaison from the S.C. Department of Safety, said traffic fatalities were down, but officers should stay diligent to keep South Carolina roads safe.
In South Carolina, nearly 40 percent of traffic deaths are a result of alcohol-related crashes according to data from the state Department of Transportation. At the end of November, Horry County led the state in traffic fatalities.
