McBEE — The Friends of Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge will host a program by Dr. Fred Edinger, a professor of geology at Coker College in Hartsville who was selected as Coker College Master Professor of the Year for 1999-2000 and 2005-2006.

It will take place at 6:30 p.m. March 25 at the refuge’s administrative office, 23723 US 1, 3.6 miles north of McBee.

Edinger teaches historical geology, environmental physical geology, world regional geography, geography and pre-history of Africa. His program will be about the geology of the Sandhills helping discern from the fossil and rock record the true history of the formation of the sandhills: sand dunes left from an ancient shoreline or eroded material washed down from the Appalachian Mountains.

Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1939, contains 46,000 acres of habitat for an array of plants and animals. The refuge is open year-round for wildlife-dependent recreation.

The Friends of Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is a group of residents dedicated to supporting the role of the refuge in protecting and preserving the longleaf/wiregrass ecosystem; promoting the enjoyment and responsible use of the refuge by the public; and engaging in educational and civic activities to promote the refuge and wise stewardship of its resources.
