We recently reported on a retired New York City police officer who bought a condo at the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes. He showed us mold is still in his condo, months after he was told the mold remediation project was complete.
A similar story came from another Marina Inn condo owner who said he took his life savings to buy his vacation home. Now, because of mold, he said two years later, he never spent a single night in it. Burroughs and Chapin said they couldn't comment.
Stephen Ferro said he's losing his $650,000 condo to mold. Ferro purchased his condo in July 2007. He planned to visit the following month. Then in early August, he said he received a call about the mold problem. Ferro said he was told there was “a little issue” with mold and mildew contamination in his condo. He was then told, “it was nothing to worry about."
Ferro decided to make the trip to Myrtle Beach to see the condo. He said mold came through the walls and was in the kitchen cabinet. Ferro said he was assured it would be fixed. "I was actually pushed through my closing and when I asked them were there any problems in the unit, they said it was nothing,” said Ferro. “Never once did they say we have this issue in the building, there's no way a unit in two week time frame, gets mold and mildew contaminated overnight."
Ferro said he saw workers in his unit but was never given updates. He hired a private mold testing company who recommended not going in the unit. Ferro said he came to Myrtle Beach again to meet with Bill Pritchard of Burroughs and Chapin. “I took a construction expert with me and walked the site with construction hats and he said this is just a bandaid.” Ferro said, "I had a meeting with Bill Pritchard and in his office, he told me to go f*** myself." "In front of two witnesses, he said we're not doing s*** for you and said no you can leave,” said Ferro. “I asked him why'd you invite me and my friends down here to discuss this, you could have just told me that over the phone." Ferro said he out close to $800,000 total and he can’t sell the condo. "My credit is ruined. I can't even buy a pack of gum right now because of them."
Ferro said he's now in foreclosure with the bank. He cannot sue due to a clause in his contract. He must instead handle any disputes through mediation and arbitration. He said his arbitration date is a year away. He said he just wants his money back.
Again, Burroughs and Chapin said they could not comment about this case.
