Boy Scout troops discover new fundraiser activity

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Boy Scout troops from the Pee Dee Area Council, serving 11 counties (Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Horry, Marion, Lee, Marlboro, Sumter, and Williamsburg) in northeast South Carolina have discovered a better way to fundraise. Instead of selling chocolate bars or cheesecakes, the council recently teamed up with 58 year-old Interstate Batteries to raise money for something people use everyday - batteries.

Fundraising has changed dramatically from the days when student council members walked door to door with a cardboard box of treats to sell for a dollar. It's more sophisticated and in keeping with a shifting eye toward value, focuses more and more on sensible items.

The Pee Dee Council chose to partner with Interstate Batteries for its spring fundraising campaign because it offers a practical product that everyone uses. The council is the first in the area to implement this unique program. Also, up to 70 percent of the sales collected will be allocated to fund summer camp and other activities. The Boy Scouts, whose motto is “Be prepared,” will offer consumers flashlights, battery organizers, key chain lights and an assortment of batteries to ensure they’re ready for hurricane season. Interstate Batteries, known for high quality and long life, offers prices that are comparable to other retailers.

“Batteries are something we all need, especially as we’re somewhat predisposed to hurricanes,” Barry McDonald, CEO of the Pee Dee Area Council said. “We’re offering a high-quality product that people will actually use, and it supports a really good mission.”

Out of the 600 scouts participating, two lucky scouts and their families will win a special prize package, donated by Interstate Batteries that includes two family four-packs of tickets to the Sprint All-Star Race in Charlotte on May 22. The package includes a stay in an area hotel, lunch and more activities.

Council will kicked off the fundraiser on Feb. 18.
