FLORENCE — United Way of Florence County recognized several of its donors and contributors at its annual meeting Monday at Florence Civic Center.
Companies and individuals were recognized with awards for their service to the organization during the campaign and throughout the year.
John Hanna, the 2009 campaign chairman and incoming 2010 board chairman, said the United Way raised $1.1 million — a sharp decline in the giving from years past, but better than they expected in such an unpredictable economic climate.
“We are very thankful and very fortunate to have folks in Florence who consistently, regardless of the economic times, really get down and work hard for us,” Hanna said.
The top contributor in 2009 was Blue Cross Blue Shield/PGBA LLC with a donation of $159,367.
This year the theme of the meeting was youth and education. Dr. Allie E. Brooks, interim superintendent of Florence School District 1, was the keynote speaker and spoke about the importance of community service and reaching out and helping others.
He quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and said people must always think to themselves, “What are you doing for others?”
Fourth-grade art club students from Delmae Heights Elementary School painted pictures that were used as awards for more than 40 companies recognized for their support.
The United Way also welcomed new incoming 2010 board members: Dr. Kay Lawrimore of Francis Marion University; John Cariati of Assurant Specialty Property; U.W. Lowery, retired rail road engineer; and Eric McCartney, of H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant .
Companies that have not contributed to the United Way but are interested in doing so should call the United Way of Florence County office at (843) 662-2407 and a representative will come out and share information about United Way, its partner agencies, and its initiatives.
